Mary Proctor (American, born 1960), First African American Family and President in the White House, 2008- 2016, paint and mixed media on wood, 92 x 39 inches,, High Museum of Art, Atlanta, gift of Carl and Marian Mullis, 2018.188. © 2021 Mary L. Proctor.
Florida-based artist Mary Proctor began using doors as surfaces for her paintings after losing family in a house fire. This tragic event was a turning point in her life and motivated her feverish production of art on all sorts of architectural and other found surfaces. This celebratory door painting is a tribute to the first African American US president and his family through bright, patriotic color splashes and riffs on President Obama's signature motto, "Yes, We Can."
