Artist Clementine Hunter

Wash day was usually on Mondays. The work involved hand scrubbing the dirty items, then boiling the clothes outdoors in big black pots, and hanging the clothes on the line to dry. Clementine Hunter did this many times during her years of working at Melrose Plantation. Each glass ornament is meticulously hand sculpted and hand painted by highly skilled artisans.  No two ornaments are alike.  Each piece has its own distinctive shape and textured surface that allows you to feel the passion in her work.

Clementine Hunter is one of the most important self-taught contemporary American artists of the 20th Century.  Clementine worked in the cotton fields and pecan groves at Melrose Plantation.  She died in 1988 at the age of 101.  Her paintings tell the story of plantation life before mechanization came to agriculture.  her depictions of cotton pickings, pecan pickings, was days, weddings and other scenes of life at Melrose have made her works coveted around the world.
