The surrealist liked to pick up on old mythological contexts in his paintings. The symbol of the rose stands not only for love, but also for secrecy. "Sub rosa" was what people said in the Middle Ages when they wanted to say something in secret. Thus, the rose became the sign of the enigma - so it is no coincidence that the rose hovers over Dalí's world.
